Concept
Training load
The combined stress created by training frequency, duration, intensity, and the runner's current capacity.
What creates load
Running more often, for longer, or at higher intensity all add load. Hills, heat, poor sleep, and life stress can increase the effective cost.
Why capacity matters
The same session may be manageable for one runner and excessive for another. Load only makes sense relative to current fitness and recovery.
How to progress
Stable training is built by changing one major variable at a time and observing the response before adding more.
How to use it
Track weekly minutes, hard sessions, soreness, sleep, and whether the next planned run remains achievable.
Common misconception
A percentage increase rule cannot guarantee safety; context and recovery still determine whether added load is appropriate.
