Stride length

The distance covered with each step as the runner moves forward. Devices may use stride and step terminology differently.

How it connects to cadence

Cadence and distance per step combine to create speed. At the same pace, a small cadence increase generally requires a slightly shorter step.

Why longer is not always better

A longer step can come from stronger propulsion, but reaching the foot far ahead may create braking rather than useful speed.
