Concept
Race-specific training
Training that progressively rehearses the pace, duration, terrain, fueling, and fatigue demands of a target race.
From general to specific
General aerobic and strength work build capacity. Specific training then teaches the runner to express that capacity under race-like demands.
Extension of quality
Specific endurance can develop by gradually extending manageable work near the intended race demand rather than forcing faster effort.
Why scaling matters
Elite special blocks illustrate specificity under fatigue, but their volume and density are inappropriate for most recreational runners.
How to use it
Add specific work in manageable segments and extend it only while weekly training and recovery remain stable.
Common misconception
Race-specific training does not mean racing every long run or copying an elite session at full size.
