Half-Marathon Race Day Strategy

A good race day plan protects you from the two classic beginner mistakes: starting too fast and changing too many things at once.

Start controlled

The first kilometers should feel almost too easy. If you cannot talk early, the pace is probably too aggressive.

Use checkpoints

Check effort around 5K and 10K before deciding whether to hold, ease back, or gradually press.

Follow the fuel plan

Use the fueling and fluid timing you practiced. Do not wait until you feel empty to start thinking about fuel.

Finish by effort

If you feel good late, increase effort gradually. A strong final few kilometers is better than rescuing a reckless start.
