Concept
Running cadence
The total number of steps both feet take each minute while running, usually shown as steps per minute or spm.
What the number measures
A cadence of 168 spm means the left and right feet together complete 168 steps in one minute.
How it relates to speed
Running speed comes from cadence multiplied by distance covered per step. Increasing cadence while shortening each step may change rhythm without increasing speed.
Why it varies
Cadence commonly changes with pace, terrain, fatigue, height, experience, and the purpose of the run.
How to use it
Compare cadence across similar sections of several runs, and always read it beside pace, comfort, and stride length.
Common misconception
A higher cadence is not automatically better, faster, safer, or more efficient.
